As part of a new development in renewable energy, Northsound Ltd were involved in installing a 1 MW boiler. This boiler not only runs on woodchip but will also burn chicken litter as part of a new sustainable way of heating poultry sheds.
The first stage of this project consisted of installing an underground District Heat Main. This comprised of laying a pre-insulated flow and return in trenches that supplied five chicken sheds from the main boiler house. The entire underground system was fully welded. Whilst our site team carried out this installation, our fabricators in our workshop constructed a steel skid that would be the platform for a backup LPG boiler and associated pipework. This was all pre-fabricated and assembled in our workshop and then delivered onto site for a more affective installation process.
Once the skid was delivered the 1 MW boiler was then put in place for installation. In order to make good progress with the project’s tight lead times Northsound had two installation teams on site. One team installed the boiler which comprised of the assembly of ducting, fans, valves, gauges etc. The second team installed all the pipework which was installed in crimped carbon to which we have all the necessary machinery and tooling. Pipework sizes ranged from 15mm to 108mm.
Proof of Northsound’s diversity, we also installed two overhead top-loaders, which would rake the product into the screw conveyors to feed the boiler. As part of this installation Northsound also fabricated stainless steel guards and deflection plates.
Given the challenging lead times Northsound are pleased to say that they completed the project on time and the farmer was able to heat his new batch of chickens. It’s a pleasure working with Energy Innovation’s professional and expert project teams.
I have worked with Piers for the last 3 years on various projects delivering district head mains and termination pipework. More recently we worked on a chicken litter burning biomass installation where Piers looked after all my mechanical installation works. This installation was unusual for us as we had no involvement from our own engineers so the professionalism of our sub-contractors was of paramount importance. I am pleased to say that Piers more than performed on this bringing together a very successful project.
